We provide a forum for all partners who have a role in healthcare disaster planning, response, or mitigation and facilitates preparedness initiatives as determined by the regional membership.

We are a partner to healthcare and emergency response organizations working to prepare for, mitigate, respond to, and recover from emergencies and disasters affecting the residents and guests of North Carolina.

Recent Deployment

Hurricane Helene Emergency Response

During Hurricane Helene, SMAT led a large-scale emergency response, deploying over 120 personnel to support critical medical operations across North Carolina.

Our primary mission was to establish and operate a State Medical Support Shelter (SMSS) in Shelby, NC.

All patients received appropriate medical care and were transitioned to safe, suitable living arrangements until permanent placements became available.

State Medical
Assistance Team

The SMAT is a multidisciplinary volunteer team of medical and non-medical professionals established to provide medical support for short and long term disasters or catastrophic events.

Members who have met the minimum training requirements, have employer approval, and are capable of/interested in deploying outside of the local area for at least 72 hours.
